An idealistic young Officer, frequently ridiculed by he peers for obsessive adherence to procedure - Michael Miller is promoted to Detective and given a haggard, indifferent mentor - Brian.
Against Michael’s objections that it is unconstitutional, Brian, following a lead, breaks into a suspicious house. Caught on a live internet feed, they rescue a pre-teen girl from the clutches of a pedophile and get the department sued, themselves suspended and all evidence from an ongoing investigation, rendered inadmissible.
During his “time off”, he develops a relationship with Anna Callaghan, a fellow Officer and old friend. But even a growing relationship, reinstatement and his new partner Vincent Drake - isn’t enough to take Michael’s mind off of recent events. Struggling to make sense of his world, Michael’s new partner offers him a way to make things right; to take the law into their own hands.
